I hate Netflix.

With a clever name, endless incentives to get you to join, and a lot of buzz, you would really think that Netflix isn't a huge waste of your money. Now that they've nearly cancelled their DVD service, I want to make it clear what they're doing wrong.

  • Netflix's catalog sucks.

It's not just their streaming catalog any more, since they are now splitting their company. It is their entire catalog. Unless you are a documentary fanatic, you will likely find no real movies on here.

  • Netflix's website is a UX disaster

I simply want to browse your catalog. I don't want to know what you think I want. Your recommendation engine is way off, by the way. Instead of making your entire website about recommendations, make a space for them on a separate page.

I should also mention that they loved to blame their problems on the USPS when they shipped DVDs. Please, go ahead and blame the government. Family issues? It's the Democrats-I know.

For these two major reasons, and these reasons only I am moving to Hulu Plus for my video choice. Well I'm off to buy some Netflix stock since they're such a great company.

It's not that Netflix just has these problems, but the fact that they have not been working actively to fix these that enrages me so much.

Tyler, I can't say much about you, other than you used to be a nice outgoing person. Now your a stuck up teenage snob who thinks he's god's gift to the world. Grow a pair my good man.

Thanks for your comment. While I do not necessarily agree with what you are saying, I can, in fact, see the light of your argument. Perhaps it is my responsibility to work on being less pompous, a character flaw I may be developing.

If you'd like to talk to me about this, feel free to send me an email using the contact form supplied here.

I just stopped by and happened to read this post. While I firmly believe that Mr. Plack is more than capable of defending his work (as writers typically do) I feel I need to validate his opinion. Our family, too, was drawn into the Netflix *brotherhood* by their enticing trial period. I had no interest in the DVD by mail service (perhaps because I am such a fast-paced person). I was only interested in the online streaming aspect. This is because their quality and speed are superb-even on a slow DSL internet connection. After all of the registration was out of the way, I started to browse the online catalogue. Obviously, I didn't expect every movie ever released in history to be on there, but even popular movies and television programs I enjoy were either nowhere to be found, or were DVD-only programs. I'll stop my abnormally long comment here before I get too specific. I just thought a short free write would be refreshing. I hope that sharing a negative opinion about a service doesn't make me "pompous" or a "snob" as well.

I don't have a credit card and I cant even try it for free for a month like they say, so instead of getting one or trying to fix it I'm saying fuck them and fuck the whole thing, I'll just watch dvds at home or order from my cable provider at 5 bucks a movie, I would rather give my money to them then some stupid fuckin company who won't put there money where the mouth is, also there new releases arn't so new my fuckin grandmother was my age when some of them were made and there just getting on there now, fuck netflix and everything to do with them, they will never have my business

Tyler I can sympathize completely. Netflix and Gamefly combined used to cost me thirty bucks a month so I could use their streaming and get their DVDs and games delivered to me. There didn’t really seem to be any other option. A few months back though my employer DISH announced Blockbuster@Home, and I started looking into it right away. Now, I get the SAME services for a third of the cost, and I get stuff I never had before. Of course I have streaming and home delivery on movies and games, but I also get a bunch of extra movie channels, and if I get a DVD or game I don’t like I can take it to a Blockbuster store and switch it out. Netflix just can’t compete with that.
